Myrtle Beach is a popular place for wedding proposals. Each year it's hard to say just how many couples get engaged on the shores of the Grand Strand. There's just something special about being on vacation and having the beautiful ocean backdrop that makes it extra wonderful.
Luis reached out while planning a trip with his girl Sami to set up a secret photo shoot. I waited for them by Pier 14 which was close to the resort they were staying at. It was the perfect setup for Luis to invite Sami to take a sunset walk on the beach. Once he knew they were close enough for me to capture the moment, he got down on his knee.
Needless to say Sami said yes! What a beautiful moment and lovely engagement images we captured afterwards.
Tips on Planning a Surprise Proposal with a Professional Photographer
Planning a surprise proposal with a professional photographer can create unforgettable memories captured in stunning detail. Here are some tips to ensure everything goes smoothly:
1. Choose the Right Photographer
- Specialization: Look for a photographer with experience in engagement or surprise proposals. They’ll know how to capture emotions discreetly.
- Portfolio: Review their portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your vision.
- Communication: Discuss your ideas and plan to make sure they understand your expectations.
2. Scout the Perfect Location
- Meaningful Spot: Choose a location that holds sentimental value or a picturesque setting (beaches, parks, gardens, cityscapes, etc.).
- Lighting: Work with the photographer to pick a time with ideal natural lighting (golden hour is a popular choice).
- Accessibility: Ensure the location is easy to reach and not overly crowded to maintain the surprise.
3. Plan the Details
- Positioning: Discuss in advance where you and your partner will stand during the proposal for the best angles.
- Signals: Set a cue or subtle signal to alert the photographer when you’re about to propose.
- Props or Decor: Incorporate flowers, candles, or other decor elements if appropriate, but keep it simple to avoid arousing suspicion.
4. Timing is Everything
- Punctuality: Ensure everyone arrives on time, especially if you're relying on natural light.
- Engagement Season: Consider quieter times of year to avoid crowds if you’re using a popular spot.
5. Practice Your Movements
- Rehearse how and where you’ll kneel to make sure you’re in the perfect spot for the photographer to capture the moment.
- Practice opening the ring box naturally—it can be trickier than expected!
6. Keep It a Secret
- Alibi: Create a believable excuse for your partner to dress appropriately for the setting without revealing the proposal.
- Co-conspirators: If friends or family are involved, ensure they’re in on the plan but know when to stay hidden.
7. Celebrate the Moment
- Plan for a mini photo session immediately after the proposal. This ensures you have a mix of candid and posed shots with your fiancé’s joyful reaction.
- Consider celebrating with a small picnic, champagne, or a meaningful activity nearby.
8. Discuss Post-Production
- Ask about editing and delivery timelines for the photos.
- Some photographers offer same-day sneak peeks to share the joy with friends and family right away.
